ABOUT THE POSITION


Wage Range: $15.42 - $21.69 per hour.

The City of Redding is recruiting individuals who, under general supervision, assist Police personnel by handling non-hazardous situations, meet the general public in the field, initiate and administer programs promoting crime prevention and awareness and other community programs. The eligibility list resulting from this recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies, and subsequent vacancies until the list is expired.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Respond to calls for assistance; gather information and compile standard reports of “after the fact” thefts, injury and non-injury traffic collisions, public accident, malicious mischief, lost and found property, runaway juvenile, and missing persons; teach the City’s Neighborhood Watch and other specialized crime awareness prevention programs; perform business security inspections; conduct personal/residential security inspections; present domestic violence prevention programs; direct traffic and assist in crowd control; conduct routine patrols for abandoned automobiles and parking violations; coordinate contact for vehicle towing with police impound yard; conduct routine investigative identification work, book evidence and property; plan, coordinate, and oversee the activities and participants of law enforcement/correctional and social service community programs; plan, organize and coordinate activities and resources, including participants, facilities, training, equipment, transportation, etc.; and perform other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Operating procedures of modern police department; laws, regulations, and civil and criminal statues of the City, State, and appropriate Federal agencies; provisions of the California Vehicle Code applicable to municipal traffic and vehicle control; crime prevention hardware/materials and basic security devices; principles and practices of effective leadership; and effective planning and organizational skills.

Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and employees. Act with resourcefulness and tact; communicate effectively with all members of the community, particularly in public presentations; prepare concise and accurate reports; understand and carry out oral and written instructions with minimum supervision; maintain neat and accurate records; operate two-way radio equipment; learn to operate and train others to operate and maintain required equipment and tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other departments; and deal effectively with victims of crime.

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent; and typical experience would include a minimum of one year relevant experience in a job with significant public contact.

Special Requirements: Possession of the appropriate California driver’s license, or ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment. Must be at least 18 years of age. Felony conviction disqualifying. Ability to work shifts, weekends, and holidays required.

Veterans Credit: Veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military service and receive a passing score on the examination will have 2 points added to their final examination score. To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a copy of the DD214, indicating honorable discharge, WITH EACH EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.

Test Requirements: The examination process may include an oral board examination, written examination, practical exercise, or any combination thereof.

NOTE: INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. MEETING THE ANNOUNCED REQUIREMENTS DOES NOT GUARANTEE SELECTION INTO THE EXAMINATION PROCESS. APPLICATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED BY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS WHO WILL DETERMINE THOSE BEST QUALIFIED TO BE TESTED.
