Police Officer - Entry Level
ABOUT THE POSITION
Wage Range: $24.57 - 34.57/hr or $4,258 - $5,992/month - D.O.Q.
Position includes fully-paid PERS retirement 3% @ 50 W/9% EPMC, health and welfare benefits with a 10% employee premium share, educational/POST incentive, shift differential, uniform allowance, and 4-10 schedule.
The City is establishing an eligibility list in anticipation of future vacancies. The Redding Police Department has a reputation as a progressive agency offering excellent training and career development programs and providing our officers with excellent, modern equipment. We have implemented an effective Community Oriented Policing Program in our community. Assignment opportunities include: Patrol, Special Weapons and Tactics, Field Evidence Technicians, Field Training Officers, Investigations Unit, Motor Unit, Canine, Bicycle Patrol and the Neighborhood Police Unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Perform all classes of law enforcement work, including but not limited to, patrol assigned beat enforcing laws and maintaining order. Examples of duties include: traffic law enforcement, regulation enforcement, crime prevention and crime investigation from complaint to final solution of cases.
Knowledge of: Practices and procedures of police science and administration; criminal law, City ordinances and regulations; investigation and crime prevention methods; rules of evidence and laws governing the apprehension, arrest, custody and prosecution of law violators; and effective public relations.
Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and employees. Read, understand, and carry out departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and regulations; analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action; write clear and accurate reports; understand and follow oral directions; learn the use and care of automobiles, motorcycles, and small firearms; make detailed observations, recall names, personal descriptions, and details of incidents; meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance and agility.
To qualify: Candidates must be a graduate of a California P.O.S.T. police academy at time of appointment and must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, have completed 30 semester college units, 60 semester units desirable, and have less than one year of "street" experience with a municipality, Sheriff's Office or equivalent. Applicants with custodial (jail) experience only will be tested as entry level.
Special Requirements: Current Basic POST certification (date of California POST academy certification or date completed update course must be indicated on employment application). Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
A medical examination must be completed satisfactorily after an offer of employment and before the start date to ensure essential elements of the position can be performed; candidates must successfully complete a psychological evaluation, a personal background investigation, a polygraph examination, and a substance use test.

Veterans Credit: Veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military service and receive a passing score on the examination will have 2 points added to their final examination score. To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a copy of the DD214, indicating honorable discharge, WITH EACH EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.
Test Requirements: The examination process may include an oral board examination, written examination, practical exercise, or any combination thereof.
