ABOUT THE POSITION
Wage: $3,636 per month while attending the academy, and $4,258 to $5,992 per month upon graduation from the academy, plus full-paid PERS retirement with 9% EPMC, health and welfare benefits with a 10% employee premium share, education/POST incentive, shift differential, uniform allowance, 4-10 schedule, and annual physical as part of physical fitness program.
The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list in anticipation of future vacancies. A Police Recruit is a non-sworn, probationary employee hired by the City who has not completed the basic POST Academy training as required to become a sworn police officer. The City may send recruit officers to an academy or hire persons currently enrolled in an academy. At the time the recruit is hired, the cost of the academy and other expenses associated with attending the academy may be paid for by the City.
The Redding Police Department has a reputation as a progressive agency offering excellent training and career development programs and providing our officers with excellent, modern equipment. We have implemented an effective Community Oriented Policing Program in our community. Assignment opportunities include: Patrol, Special Weapons and Tactics, Field Evidence Technicians, Field Training Officers, Investigations Unit, Motor Unit, Canine, Bicycle Patrol and the Neighborhood Police Unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: The knowledge and skills required to complete the required course work beyond a high school diploma and to successfully perform the job requirements.
Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and employees. Read, understand, and carry out departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and regulations; analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and responsible course of action; write clear and accurate reports; understand and follow oral directions; learn the use and care of automobiles, motorcycles, and small firearms; make detailed observations, recall names, personal descriptions, and details of incidents; and meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance and agility.
Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; minimum education of United States high school graduation or passage of GED test; 30 semester college units, 60 semester units desirable.
Special Requirements: A medical examination must be completed satisfactorily after an offer of employment and before the start date to ensure essential elements of the position can be performed; candidates must successfully complete a psychological evaluation, personal background investigation, polygraph examination, and a substance use test; minimum age of 18 years; no felony convictions. Shall be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Possession of the appropriate California driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
Interested individuals must submit a City of Redding employment application form to the Personnel Department in order to be considered. Prompt application is encouraged. All applicants must provide proof of a “POST Entry-Level Test Battery” (“T-Score”) of 52.5 or higher in order to be considered (certificates over two years old will not be accepted) and possess a minimum of 30 college semester units upon successful completion of the academy, OR 2) be currently enrolled in a POST academy in good standing and possess 30 college semester units upon successful completion of the academy. The testing phase will include an oral board panel, background investigation, psychological, medical, and polygraph examination. Veterans Credit: Veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military service and receive a passing score on the examination will have 2 points added to their final examination score. To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a copy of the DD214, indicating honorable discharge, WITH EACH EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.
Test Requirements: The examination process will include a background investigation, and may include an oral board panel, a written examination, or any combination thereof.
NOTE: INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. MEETING THE ANNOUNCED REQUIREMENTS DOES NOT GUARANTEE SELECTION INTO THE EXAMINATION PROCESS. APPLICATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED BY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS WHO WILL DETERMINE THOSE BEST QUALIFIED TO BE TESTED.
