Red Light Cameras

The Redding Police Department has joined many agencies throughout the United States by utilizing automated red light cameras to reduce red light related collisions. In recent years, the City of Redding experienced a 31% increase in the amount of red light related traffic collisions. In response, the first camera system was activated in September 2007, with additional systems soon to follow. Each camera takes a total of four photos and a 12 second video of every violation.

How does it work?
A Redding Police Department Red Light Enforcement Specialist reviews each red light violation recorded by the photo enforcement cameras. If approved by the Specialists, a Notice to Appear (citation) is mailed to each red light violator, and includes the registered owner's information, date to appear in court and contact information. The notice to appear will also include four photos of the red light violation: one of the vehicle behind the limit line when the light is red, one with the vehicle continuing through the intersection while the light is red, one showing the driver of the vehicle, and one will show a close up of the license plate.
What gives the City of Redding authority to issue photo enforcement citations?
The authority is granted by California Vehicle Code sections 21455.5 – 21455.7.
What is the correct yellow light timing for the intersection at Bechelli and Cypress and who establishes that timing?
Both Bechelli and Cypress are posted at 35 mph, based on a speed survey. California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) sets the yellow light timing for a 35 mph intersection at 3.6 seconds. City traffic engineers have verified the yellow light timings are in compliance with Caltrans standards. Where can I view a video of the citation?
If you have received a red light photo enforcement citation and would like to view the corresponding video, follow the directions provided on your citation and log onto www.photonotice.com from any internet connected computer (home, the public library, etc.). Use "REDDNG" for the City Code field, not "REDDING."
For those without an internet connection the Redding Police Department maintains public viewing hours on Monday and Friday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
How do I get information on how to pay or contest my citation?

I think I ran the red light because I saw the light bulbs go off. What do I do next?
If you think you might have run the red light at a photo enforced intersection you should expect to see something in the mail within 15 days. If after 15 days you have not received anything in the mail and you still have questions you can call us at 530-225-4343 or email us at photoredlight@reddingpolice.org.
